"When I got the letter last November telling me I'd been nominated for a MBE, I was in two minds about whether to accept.

The Empire and what it stands for makes me uncomfortable. I was getting ready to decline.

But then my dad called me.

He was extremely emotional. He cried (he never cries).

He said how proud of me he was.

He said he wanted me to get the recognition for my hard work and the nomination for services to new dads was deserved. He said it would be incredible for the whole family to have one of us awarded in this way.

For all the sacrifices they went through to come to the UK from Grenada and St Vincent in the 1960s. For all the racism they experienced. For all the work they put in to raise a family.

I cried too. I told him my hard work comes from what he and mum role modelled to me growing up. I thanked him for the stability and security they provided for me which has given me the confidence to step into the world and take up space.

It was an amazing conversation that I will never ever forget.

And then my cousin Jordan messaged me and said that our Grandma and Grandad would want me to take it and that they would be looking down and smiling from Heaven 🕊❤️

And then my eldest daughter hugged me and said she would be proud of me regardless of what decision I make. She's only 9 but has incredible emotional intelligence.

So I accepted.

And last week we went to Windsor Castle.

And I had a laugh with the King about him supporting Burnley Football Club 😅

And I told him about Parenting Out Loud.

Mum and dad were proud ❤️

My daughter saw her dad meet royalty (it was all worth it just for this moment and the picture) ❤️

And it made her school newsletter ❤️

This one’s for the family.

This one’s for the mission.

So here I am.

You can still call me Elliott though 😉"
